Local boy Dexter Summerscales-Heard is just four years old and has had to overcome immense adversity throughout his life.
Dexter was born with quadriplegic Cerebral Palsy and suffers from considerable physical disabilities as a result. He is fully reliant on his wheelchair and is unable to speak, also suffering from regular seizures. Despite his physical impairments, Dexter is an intelligent and mentally capable child. He has an abundance of energy and humour, renowned as the class clown for his sunny disposition in school.
Unfortunately, last February Dexter was hospitalised and has since been diagnosed with a swallowing issue, which now impairs him from eating.
Dexter desperately wants to regain his ability to swallow, to provide some type of normality to his life. Optimistically, there is a treatment called VitalStim, which is designed to treat swallowing disorders by retraining the muscles. The treatment is currently available on the NHS for adults but has not yet been approved for children. The only solution is to travel to a specialist centre in the US, called NAPA, where Dexter can undergo the treatment in Autumn or the New Year.
All he needs now is the funds to support his journey, which you can help with!
To raise funds for this treatment, Dexter’s Auntie Lauretta Summerscales and her husband Yonah Acosta, who are International Principal ballet dancers, have decided to organise a gala event of professional ballet at the New Victoria Theatre in Woking on the 10th of November 2019. They have received overwhelming support from other members of the Royal Ballet throughout the UK and Europe, who have agreed to dance in aid of Dexter. Wayne Sleep, OBE, will also be hosting the event, which promises to be an evening of incredible entertainment and talent.
