This year, over 150 children aged between 7 and 16 put on their A-game to represent Woking as they fought for victory at the Specsavers Surrey Youth Games.
All 11 Surrey boroughs competed in 11 different sports at Surrey Sports Park and Woking Leisure Centre. For many, it was their first experience of competitive sport on such a grand scale, and Team Woking came prepared to win.
Their determination and sportsmanship shone through as they ran, boxed, and tackled their way into the top of the medals chart in a huge variety of sports.
We were successful in bringing home 7 gold, 2 silver, and 1 bronze, as well as achieving excellent results in other sports across the weekend. The final Woking medals table was as follows:
- Gold - Badminton (U14 Mixed), Boccia (U13 Mixed), Boxing (U16 Contact Mixed and U16 Non-Contact Mixed), Football (U9 Girls), Hockey (U11 Girls) and Netball (U11 High 5 Girls).
- Silver - Boccia (U13 Mixed) and Netball (U13 Girls).
- Bronze - Rugby (U11 Girls).
"What an absolutely fantastic achievement! On behalf of everyone at the Council, I would like to congratulate Team Woking on their superb performances. Special thanks must go to all the staff and coaches who gave up their time in the build-up to and during the competition, helping to make the Specsavers Surrey Youth Games such a success."
- Cllr Colin Kemp
Team Woking is very grateful to sponsors Freedom Leisure, Headline Design and Print and Orange Promotions for their support in preparing the young superstars for the Games. Thanks to their kind sponsorship, Woking Borough Council was able to offer young people across the Borough free coaching and the opportunity to try a new sport.
