With January almost behind us, there’s still time to make a new year pledge to look after yourself this year. Exercise is proven to release endorphins which are the perfect antidote for the darker days. Whether it’s setting step targets, braving the gym or pushing your limits, it’s not too late to kick off 2019 with a fresh, fit start.

Here are our top tips to stop you stalling and get you started:

1. Sign up to Woking Parkrun

Woking’s Parkrun takes place every Saturday morning at 9am in Woking Park. The 5k distance is suitable for both beginners and experts and is a great way to perfect your running technique or beat your personal best! Parkrun is free to enter which is good news for those January budgets and registration is easily completed on their website. If you’re feeling social, there’s an open invitation to join the regulars for a coffee at the Leisure centre Costa after the run- a great way to compare running tips!

2. Join a fitness centre

Woking has a range of gyms that are perfect for improving your fitness levels.  Puregym Woking is a great value option and open 24/7 to accommodate any schedule. A great way to keep yourself motivated is to make your workouts varied and exciting, which is easy with Puregym’s no-contract membership which includes access to the 50+ classes they have on offer.

The recently redeveloped Woking Sportsbox has a gym, a swimming pool and an exciting selection of exercise classes available. Let the kids enjoy the lazy river while you continue your training in the new state-of-the-art gym or introduce some variation into your routine with classes such as Bodypump, Spin and Aqua Aerobics.

3. Enjoy the scenic walking routes of Woking

It’s essential to take rest days from workouts but make sure you keep your muscles working with gentle exercise which helps your body recover but keep building endurance. Going for walks is a great way to get the whole family involved! We recommend taking in the views of Chobham Common or combining education with exercise by walking the HG Wells Heritage Tour - a 3.5mile walk encompassing locations that inspired some of the writers’ greatest masterpieces.

4. Invest in fitness gear!

Get yourself off the sofa and out exercising by investing in some good trainers. Go no further than Woking Shopping Centre for a wide range of sports shops that won’t break the bank. Try Sports Direct or JD Sports, both located in Woking Shopping Centre. For more specialist running equipment, Sweatshop offers top-quality equipment as well as expert advice on your purchases.

5. Step up to the Surrey Half Marathon

Why not challenge yourself and sign up for the Surrey half marathon on Sunday 10th March? If you’re fresh to running, the 5K is the perfect goal to aim for, allowing you to enjoy the atmosphere and feel a real sense of achievement. Or get the whole family involved with a 2k race for the kids! All races leave from Woking Leisure Centre, where there will be food and drink vendors available, as well as a TV screen for those who want to cheer their loved ones on but don’t fancy braving the cold!
