You’re facing thirteen point one miles of pavement-pounding at the Surrey Half Marathon. And understandably, you might be a little bit intimidated. We are too! But we’ve got some quick tips to put your best foot forward.
IT’S A (HALF) MARATHON, NOT A SPRINT!
There’s an old marathoners adage, “First half, don’t be an idiot; second half, don’t be a wimp.” Simply put, don’t go trying to win it in the first mile – start off at a steady pace and think about the big picture.
Once you’ve hit the half-way mark, things could get tough. Runners talk about “hitting the wall”, and it’s hard to overcome. But the fact is, you can overcome it, so face up to the second half of the race with fiery determination and you’ll be across the finish line before you know it!
TRAIN BY THE WEEK
Rather than setting your targets on a run-by-run basis, set yourself a goal for the week. Once you’ve accomplished 35+ miles in a week, the 13.1 will feel like a walk in the park. Well, a run starting at Woking Park, but close enough!
