Dementia Awareness Week 2019 kicks off across the UK next week, running from the 20th to the 26th May. With a theme of ‘Remember the Person’, Dementia Awareness Week sets out to raise awareness of the importance of dementia research and to encourage everyone to work together towards finding a cure – a worthy cause given that there an estimated 800,000 people living with dementia in the UK.
It is clear Dementia has a far-reaching effect across the UK but looking more locally at Woking, whilst just over 1% of the population is affected it is fair to say the impact of dementia is felt by a much bigger audience.
And to mark Dementia Awareness Week, there are a number of events in Woking.
Dementia Friends Information Sessions. Woking Dementia Action Alliance (DAA) has been created to support local communities within the borough to strive towards being a fully integrated Dementia Friendly community – and these sessions are hosted regularly by the DAA to aid this goal. Two will be taking place during Dementia Awareness Week, located at Woking Borough Council on the 21st May and at Woking Hospice on the 23rd May. These sessions are free to attend, and they last around one hour. Dementia Friends Information Sessions aim to equip willing participants with the information and skills to become a ‘Dementia Friend’- someone who learns more about dementia and takes small steps to help those suffering.
Legal advice drop-in session: PD Law are hosting a free legal advice drop in session on 21st May at Notcutts Rivendell Garden Centre from 10.30am-2.30pm for people suffering from dementia, or those caring for someone with dementia, to access free legal advice in a relaxed setting.
Take a trip down memory lane: Discover the Reminiscence Collection, an incredible resource including books, DVDs, games and activities designed to evoke memories and stimulate discussion and conversation. Aimed at those who support someone living with dementia or memory loss, this event takes place on Thursday 23 May from 2pm to 4pm at Woking library (Gloucester Walk, Woking, GU21 6EP)
